This week’s edition of Keep FOCUSED – the Official Blog and Podcast of FOCUSED PURSUIT and FOCUSED PURSUIT.com, discusses how we can use our aptitudes outside of the workplace.

Although our natural abilities definitely apply to our careers and professions, I cannot express enough how important it is to exude our talents “off the clock” as well.  The mission of FOCUSED PURSUIT is “to help clients achieve their personal and professional goals.”  I intentionally wrote “personal” before “professional” in the mission to make that point.

Every week grants us 168 hours of life.  How we use that time is truly free will, though we may feel like prisoners or indentured servants!  Let’s look at the average working-class person.  If we do the math, sleep and work account for around two-thirds of that time.  Therefore, the remaining one-third is available to be spent in other areas, hopefully of our own choosing.  This is the time that we can allocate expressing our natural abilities, especially if we aren’t getting that fulfillment through work.

Here is a personal example. With the Highlands Ability Battery, I score very high in Observation, and very low in Idea Productivity.  High Observation mean that I pick up on details, especially visual changes and inconsistencies, very easily and quickly.  I notice everything from pictures not hanging straight, to the lack of cleanliness in my own home.  Very low Idea Productivity means that I can concentrate and focus for long periods of time.  While some people have ideas constantly jumping out of their brains, I usually have a few, which I then hone in on and perfect.

That being said, table tennis is a perfect outlet for me.  My first week of July was spent umpiring at the U.S. Open Table Tennis Championships in Las Vegas.  I do well, and more importantly, enjoy officiating, because it is an outlet for my Observation and Idea Productivity aptitudes.  I enjoy overseeing players, picking out whether they are following countless rules, and observing the intricate details of the game.  It is exhilarating for me to umpire a seven-game, 60-minute match because it challenges me to perpetually pay attention.  One slip up on my part could distract the athletes, or cause them to become distraught at me. 

Do you feel like your work isn’t challenging?  Do you feel you’re not exuding “the total you?”  Aptitudes long to be expressed throughout our entire lives.  It is simply not something that we can turn off with the flick of a switch.
