BLOGGING IN BEIJING #3: Not Going Hungry

Eating is very cheap in Beijiing.  I can get lunch normally for 14 RMB ($2.00) and a very large dinner for 21 RMB ($3.00).  With those types of prices, I do not have a need to go to Wal-Mart and store up Lean Cuisine!

But the more American the food, the more it caters to tourists, which means the cost goes up.  I ate at Subway and paid 33 RMB ($4.50) for a six-inch roasted chicken breast (half the amount you would get in the U.S.) with chips and a small cup of soup (mostly hot broth with some noodles).  Sorry, Subway, but I’ll “eat fresh” somewhere else at those prices!

McDonald’s is definitely popular here, but I have not gone there yet.  (McDonald’s actually delivers in Beijing, which is probably a story in itself).  I was treated to Starbucks with a friend, and my venti café mocha with caramel cost 42 RMB ($6.00).

It tasted great, but again, not worth the bang for the buck, considering I bought “The Serious Case of Benjamin Button” DVD from a street vendor vendor for 5 RMB ($0.65)
