BLOGGING IN BEIJING #5: Speaking at a Toastmasters Club

On Saturday, March 28, I visited the Beijing Advanced Speakers Toastmasters Club.  I was referred to one of their members by several friends in Texas.  Currently, there are roughly 80 clubs in 5 divisions in District 85 China Toastmasters.  Beijing Advanced Speakers is the only advanced club in the district (as well as the country).

It was a fun and interesting time.  It was the first ever Toastmasters meeting that I had attended where the majority of the members did not speak English as their first language.  Although English was the only language spoken during the meeting, I could pick up on word usage that is not usually the norm.  However, I don’t have any room to criticize anyone’s English in China, as my Chinese is much to be desired!

The three speeches from the members in the meeting were all very good.  I was given the opportunity to speak as well, and took advantage of it.  While speaking a little slower than normal pace and throwing in a few Beijing pop culture references, I received a positive response from the audience.

Overall, it was a Toastmasters meeting  (I'm assuming) just like any other place around the world.

Wow! I knew you were a few hours ahead of CST in Beijing, but I didn't realize you could time travel all the way to the end of this month! Very impressive - but then, you've always been ahead of your time.
