BLOGGING IN BEIJING #9: Going for a Jog
I really enjoy jogging. I didn't really start running on a regular basis until after I graduated high school. Since then, I have jogged in several different places around the United States...and now around the world.
When I lived in Hillsboro, Illinois, I jogged at the track. When I lived in Hurst, Texas, I jogged around the block. My favorite place to jog to this day is on the beach, running into the sunset on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
Jogging in Beijing is easier than I thought. I don't know how much truth there is to it, but I was told that the masses didn't start driving cars until about ten years ago. They have major roads for taxis, busses, as well as cars, but in Beijing, they also have a specific lane for bikes, motorcycles, mopeds, walkers...and I guess joggers are thrown into that cauldron as well.
Instead of running alongside the road and almost getting hit by cars, early in the morning it is sometimes like I have my own running lane about five feet wide. Most of the time I'll run past people waiting for busses or cabs. If I'm in a chipper mood, I'll garner a "high five" or even a "low five" to obtain a smile or a laugh. Wo shi mei guo ren, he tamen zhi dao. If your Chinese ping-ying is fuzzy, that means, I'm an American, and they know it."
However, having my own lane doesn't mean I won't come across CRAZY internsections! People drive sometimes like either laws weren't invented, or they don't apply to them. Either way, I have to always be on the lookout, or I will be lunch for some time of vehicle :-0
